On November 20th, New Orleans-based artist Leyla McCalla will be performing at the Columbus Theater in Providence at 8pm.
A cellist and singer with a distinctive and powerful sound, Leyla finds inspiration from a variety of sources, including her Haitian heritage, New Orleans, and dancing at Cajun Mardi Gras. She studied at Smith College and New York University, and has toured extensively with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, appearing on the band’s GRAMMY-nominated album Leaving Eden.
Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes, Leyla’s debut album, was released early in 2014. The album consists of compositions she has written to Langston Hughes poetry, Haitian folk songs, and original pieces.
